COPD Clinic

We need to see you once a year for a lung function test – spirometry. This is to ensure that your condition is adequately treated and that your condition is not deteriorating. You will normally receive a letter to let you know that your test is due. Please make an appointment with Sister Bridget Hennessy to have this done, telling reception what it is for so that they may give you an appropriate length appointment.

When you are going to have a breathing test, you should follow the advice in the letter or leaflet which comes with your appointment letter.

Some tests may need you:

  • Not to smoke for 24 hours before the test
  • To wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing
  • Not to eat anything heavy for two hours before the test
  • Not to drink alcohol for at least four hours before the test.

And they may ask you not to take these medicines:

  • Salbutamol (ventolin, salamol) or bricanyl inhaler for at least six hours before the test
  • Atrovent (ipratropium), duovent or combivent for at least six hours before the test
  • Symbicort, serevent, seretide and theophylline (aminophylline) for 12 hours before the test
  • Tiotropium for 24 hours before the test.

If you do have to take one of these medicines – then make a note of when you take it, and let the tester know.

If you are unsure of anything, you should get in touch with the person who made you the appointment. Do this as soon as you can.

Following your COPD review, your medications can be reauthorised for up to one year, depending on your control.
